Recovering.

I'm now one week out from my most miserable week I've had through all my medical training. It was my first week of night float in radiology. When I was a medicine intern night float was painful, but I had upper level residents in house that I could call and chat with about sick patients, and they could come and look at anyone I was uncomfortable with. I also always had the option of asking the ICU to check out a patient that I thought was sick (yes, I know that everyone in the hospital is sick, but these people were really knocking-on-death's-door-sick).

Radiology night float is different. The shift starts at 9 pm. After 10 pm our staff radiologist on long call goes home and I am the only radiologist (and just in training) in the hospital. I have attendings who are at home, sleeping that I can call upon if I'm really not comfortable with a study, but for the most part it's me with a whopping 10 months of training under my belt.

Fortunately my week was rainy and the young kids were not out on their ATVs, so there weren't a lot of traumas (which are some of the more stress provoking situations because of the short time we have to find all the pertinent findings for the trauma surgeons who are breathing down your neck deciding if the patient needs emergent surgery), but it was still a busy enough week. There were several cases that I was contemplating calling in an attending, but I didn't. I spent the remainder of the night stewing over whether I had made the right call and finally in the morning (around 7:30 or 8 am) I would get smart people (my attendings) to either confirm or reject my preliminary report. For the most part I was right. Nobody who was sent home because of my preliminary report had to be called back into the hospital because of a major miss. Nobody went to the operating room because of an incorrect finding. No one had surgery held because of a major miss. So, for my first week of night float, success, kind of.

Counting our Blessings

We finally got our computer back! We are very excited to have it back. The biggest blessing of having it back is that the memory was still intact and we didn't lose anything! I am so grateful for this because we hadn't backed up any of the pictures that we have taken in the past year. Nathan has since done this so we are now good to go. Hopefully the lightning stays far away!

Man verses storm.

We had a large lightning storm sweep through last night. It woke Emily up and she came to bed with us. Shortly after, a bright flash and a loud bang brought us all wide awake. Something beeped for a second and Dawn made me investigate. I couldn't find anything, but the storm was pretty impressive. Since Emily is quite timid about...everything, I thought I would check the weather online and see how long the storm should last. I tried turning on the computer, and...nothing. Not a single thing. No power. I checked my surge protector and it looked fine, the monitor, speakers, and printer worked, but nothing from the computer. The modem was also fried. We no longer have a computer. We'll get it checked out, hopefully today, but probably not until next week and hopefully something will be salvageable. We'll see. Until then we revert back to primitive life, without a computer. It's worse than using food storage.

Oh, that lightning shattered a pane of our neighbors glass door. Wow.

By the way, as I've been reading computer geek websites to see how bad the computer may be, surge protectors are no match for lightning.

It's a girl....we think.

I had my ultrasound last week. Everything is looking great and it was fun to see the baby move around and wiggle her toes! The baby was being very modest and really wasn't letting the tech get a good look at the gender. We did get a quick peak and the tech wanted to say it was a girl, but wouldn't because it was only for a second. Nathan had given me a second ultrasound the week before and we thought it was clear it was a girl, but with his lack of experience we didn't want to completely rely on this. So, after seeing the ultrasound on Thursday we have determined we are having a girl unless at a future ultrasound we are proven wrong:) We'll keep you posted!

Easter!

We had a fun Easter at Nathan's parents. The kids looked great before church and amazingly still looked good after church! We had a fun Easter egg hunt Saturday night. There is still a lot of candy in our house! I guess I need to let the kids have more so I don't eat all of it :)

O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A Okalhoma!

We had a fun trip to Oklahoma City over Easter Break to visit Nathan's parents. The weather was warm and we had a lot of fun seeing Grandpa and Grandma!



We visited the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial. It is a very beautiful memorial. J was caught trying to sit on the chairs they have for each person who died. The wind was slightly chili, but we had fun. We even ran into some people who used to live in Rexburg Idaho! It's a small world out there :)

We also went to and Orr Family Fun Farm. We had an Easter Egg hunt, rode on a train (that we had to help push up a small hill because it was low on gas), petted animals, and E got to ride on a horse! She loved it! Can you believe my daughter who is terrified of so much rode on a horse!

We had so much fun in Oklahoma and appreciate Nathan's parents for hosting us! We love you guys! We can't wait to go visit again.
